In the Studio: The Matriarch Session
MATRIARCH
a woman who is the head of a family or community, often seen as the leader or authority figure, respected for their wisdom, experience, and ability to provide guidance and support to those around them.
In many cultures, matriarchs are seen as the foundation of their communities, holding families together and passing on traditions, customs, and values from one generation to the next.
Earlier this year, I hosted the first-ever PLUME Matriarch Session Event, and it was such a joy. As a Washington DC Newborn and Family photographer, I work with a lot of children…and also a lot of parents, and typically (though not always!) I have the most interaction in the planning phase with the moms. While I am not a mother myself, I do know how much effort they put into making their family photos (among so many other moments) special, so they can have a tangible memory of the time spent together, and I wanted to honor and celebrate that.
Held in the studio on a weekend, these sessions were a moment for mom to style herself first and to know she would be centered in every frame.
One of my favorite things about these sessions was that each and every mom took me up on my suggestion to have a simple portrait made of just her, capturing her in this incredible moment as a woman and a mother, letting all of the attention be on her for just a moment, and reminding her that to her children, she is the most beautiful woman in the world.
PLUME Matriarch Sessions are an opportunity to celebrate the love and joy that comes with being a mom and to honor the hard work and dedication that goes into raising a family and the role that mothers and mother figures play in our world.
